The Pursuit of People

For years, I have been passionate about seeing those involved in human trafficking be set free to find a place of safety and belonging. After ministering to a few girls that appeared to be prostitutes, it became increasingly evident that they were deceived into selling themselves. As many are told they will get a good job or receive an education, often those are empty promises. Because of these types of interactions, I have grown more passionate about helping stop this horrible crime.

Billion dollar industry

Human trafficking — otherwise known as human slavery — is at its highest today. Even higher than it was when the transatlantic slave trade originally started in the 15th century. Slavery was abolished 150 years ago, and yet there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in our history. With more than 45 million people enslaved in a $150 billion dollar industry, half of which are under the age of 18. Sadly, many of us have become desensitized to it, numb to the millions of people trapped in this dark world.

our role to play

Although, we primarily focus on those that are taken into slavery, they are not the only ones “enslaved”. The oppressors — those taking advantage of the trafficked or doing the trafficking — have also fallen victim to certain strongholds. Just think of Paul in Acts 9:1-31. He actively persecuted the church, and was a prominent oppressive figure to many innocent Christians. But the Lord pursued him and he became a fiery, influential man reaching many who had never heard the name of Christ before. He endured years of persecution, all because of a powerful encounter with God.

As hard as it can be to have a heart for those actively contributing to this world of human trafficking, with Christ as our example, compassion can flow freely. God purses them, just as He would pursue anyone else. Whether victim or oppressor, it is knowing His love, healing, mercy and forgiveness that brings true freedom.
